Bird Watching Fieldtrip

Greetings Fellow Birders!

Please meet next Thursday April 25th in the parking lot in front of my condo building (31738 Lakeview Drive) at 8:00AM.

We will carpool and drive in convoy to Newport Farms, arriving around 8:30 to meet Dave Wilson and Jim Rapp, our birding guides and owners of Delmarva Birding Weekends.  I’m happy to drive 3 in my car, and am hoping to have 3 other driver volunteers.

The Farm includes fields, ponds and forest land so please dress appropriately (long pants, long sleeves, headgear, socks and comfortable walking shoes). If you have binoculars, please bring them as well as water to drink…a camera is a plus too. Given three different habitats, we should see an amazing variety of birds.

Then we’ll proceed to the Ocean City inlet to look out for shore birds.

After a 2.5 hours or so of birding, we’ll end up at the Shark, an organic/ locally source restaurant at the OC Harbor for lunch. Needless to say, lunch is up to each of us to pay for…

If you have any questions, please let me know. We could still add a few more people to our group so let me know if you have anyone else in mind.

Looking forward to seeing you,

Christina

May 24 cocktail party with Bethany Hall-Long

When is a meeting not a meeting?

When it is an afternoon cocktail party to meet our guest of honor, Delaware's new lieutenant governor, Bethany Hall-Long. She is a native of our neck of the woods.

Come and meet Bethany in an informal setting on the grounds of Café  26, located on Route 26 at Woodland Avenue. Bethany is looking forward to mingling with and meeting Shore Dems on a one-on-one basis. One of our members who will be joining us has a special history with Bethany. Come along and find out who that special person is.

Café 26 has interesting, not the run-of-the-mill, hors d'oeuvres, which will be served along with beer and wine. $20 per person. Please email your Rsvp to Lori at bennettloric378@gmail.com so we can get a head count. Space is somewhat limited so notify us soon.

If you are wondering why a cocktail party at 3:00 p.m., we are accommodating Bethany's incredibly busy schedule.

Special Meeting of SHORE DEMOCRATS
Feb
13
10:00 AM10:00

Special Meeting of SHORE DEMOCRATS

The Shore Democrats will hold a special meeting on Monday, February 13th from
10:00 a.m. to 12 noon at the South Coastal Library in Bethany Beach to address two very urgent issues.

- The first item to be discussed is the "Current Expense Referendum" for the Indian River School District, which was voted down by a margin of 20 votes on November 22nd.  A second referendum will be presented on March 2, 2017.   Mark Steele, the Superintendent of the IR District, will be making a presentation at the February 13th meeting, accompanied by Jan Steele (no relation), Director of Business for the district.

The referendum seeks additional local funding for school safety programs, measures related to enrollment growth, and student services and support including technology, textbooks, student organizations and transportation.

Voting on March 2 will be from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.  Residents of the Indian River School District who are U.S. citizens and at least 18 years of age are eligible to vote at any one of the following polling places:  East Millsboro Elementary, Georgetown Elementary, Indian River High School, Long Neck Elementary, Lord Baltimore Elementary and Selbyville Middle School.  Proof of identification or residency is required at each polling place. Residents DO NOT have to be property owners in order to vote.

The district is proposing a tax increase of 49 cents per $100 of assessed property value. The measure will raise $7,350,000 in additional local revenue. The average district taxpayer will see an increase of $95.41 in his or her annual property tax bill.

If the referendum is not approved by voters, the district could face up to $13 million in budget cuts (one-third of total budget), cuts to school safety, a significant reduction in staff due to an inability to meet payroll, larger class sizes, the loss of staff to other school districts and inadequate instructional supplies and materials.  The district could potentially lose 90 teachers, 20 paraprofessionals, 12 food service staff, 10 custodians and 7.5 secretaries.  Five administrative contracts were not renewed for 2017-2018 in addition to the five administrative positions that are currently being left unfilled.

The chart below provides a breakdown of the tax increase and the amount of revenue to be generated:

Proposed Expenditure                             Tax Increase                 Revenue

Student enrollment growth                              33 cents                       $4,950,000

School safety                                                      8 cents                       $1,200,000

Student services and support                           8 cents                       $1,200,000

TOTAL                                                                49 cents                       $7,350,000

Student enrollment growth – Funding will be used to hire the teachers and paraprofessionals authorized through the annual unit count. The tax increase will also fund the purchase of additional supplies, materials and furniture to accommodate student enrollment growth.

School safety – This expenditure includes the continued funding of the district’s 15 armed school safety monitors, five School Resource Officers and two district investigators. Additionally, it will fund improvements to doors and windows and the purchase of radios, school and bus cameras, card readers and other security devices.

Student services and support – Increased tax dollars will be invested in technology upgrades, textbook adoptions, student organizations and other support services for students. Funding will be used for computer/tablet purchase and replacement; SMART board replacements; switch expansions/replacements; software license upgrades; textbook adoptions during the next three years in English language arts, math, social studies, science, art, music, dance and theater; and support for student clubs such as Odyssey of the Mind, Business Professionals of America (BPA), Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), FFA, robotics teams and Math League. Funds may also be used for additional services that directly benefit students.

If the referendum is postponed due to inclement weather, it will be rescheduled for Thursday, March 16, 2017.

-  The second issue for discussion on February 13th is the upcoming special election for Stephanie Hansen in State Senate District 10.

As noted in the eblast that you received yesterday, if this election is not won by Stephanie Hansen, the balance of power in the Delaware State Senate will switch from Democratic control for the first time in 40 years.   The swearing-in of Bethany Hall-Long as Lieutenant Governor means that her seat in SD 10 is now vacant, resulting in a 10-10 balance of power between Democrats and Republicans.

Stephanie Hansen is our Democratic candidate for SD 10.   She needs us to help her win this seat, by phone-banking at Sussex County Democratic Headquarters this coming Tuesday from 5:30 to 7 pm, Wednesday from 12 to 4 pm, or Thursday from 5:30 to 7 pm; register at sussexdem@gmail.com; or knocking on doors in SD 10....check Stephanie's website at hansenforsenate.org for contact information; or by donating to her campaign, which can also be done on her website.

A Democratic win in this election is a must!

Sussex County Democratic Party Annual Spring Dinner

          Spring Awakening

The Sussex County Democratic Party’s annual Spring Dinner will be held on Saturday, April 9th at Heritage Shores Country Club on Route 113 S in Bridgeville.  Reception at 6pm; dinner at 7pm.  Tickets are $60 each.

The meal is a sit-down dinner and the dinner choices are Chicken Cordon Bleu or Salmon.    Table purchase and program book placement are available.

The proceeds will help us elect Democrats in November!  Last year’s Jamboree was graced by the appearance of Joe Biden.  Who knows who will show up at the dinner?

The keynote speaker will be United States Senator Chris Coons.  Our guests will also likely include most all candidates seeking election this year as well as our current elected officials.

The dinner committee is working on our live and silent auction.   We have had great offerings in past years.  Some exciting possibilities are being worked on!   This year’s committee consists of Nellie Soucek, Rita Hughes, Marcel Hayes and John Workman.

Tickets can be purchased from the Representative District Committees or by contactingMitch Snyder c/o judgemitch@aol.com - 302-703-2804

Sheryl Swed and Ray Sander are the 2015 recipients of the Lois Lipsett Memorial Award for Voluntary Community Services

The annual Holiday Luncheon was the setting for the presentation of the Shore Democrats Lois Lipsett Memorial Award for outstanding voluntary community services.  The 2015 winners are: Sheryl Swed and Ray Sander for their work in establishing the Delaware Botanic Gardens.  The award was presented by Shore Democrats member Diane Maddex

Award Presentation by Diane Maddex:

All of us here probably volunteer for one group or another.  But few of us ever have to create a new organization from scratch.  Our honorees today did just that.  They may not have been employees no. 1 and 2 of the Delaware Botanic Gardens, but they were certainly 3 and 4.

And in just 3 years they have taken a project with practically nothing in the bank, only a few volunteer board members, and no site … to today:

  • A beautiful wooded waterfront site leased for 99+ years at $1 a year
  • A site plan created by one of our state’s leading landscape architects to give southern Delmarva its first world-class public garden
  • A commitment by one of the leading international garden designers to create a spectacular meadow that will draw visitors from around the world
  • An active board of directors and an Advisory Council of highly regarded professionals, chaired by Delaware’s First Lady
  • Hundreds of members and supporters from individuals to businesses and foundations
  • A lecture series that has attracted leading garden speakers and authors
  • A sought-after farm dinner that has raised tens of thousands of dollars
  • One grant just a month ago that, when matched, will bring in $1.2 million
  • A capital campaign to Open the Garden Gates that is just getting started
  • Other grants waiting in the wings
  • A new web site and an active Facebook presence

Whew!

With all these achievements, the garden has plans to break ground next year and open Phase One the following year.

The leaders behind these many achievements are SHERYL SWED and RAY SANDER, dedicated members of the Shore Democrats.  Please join me in recognizing them for these amazing feats of volunteer accomplishments!  Congratulations to Sheryl and Ray!
